Looking at the music of Dutch rock band Focus, started in the late sixties by Thijs van Leer (b /31/03/48) with Jan Akkerman (b 24/12/46). Van Leer still performs and records under the name today (official site here). Akkerman's site here.

Focus The Stables April 2026

It was good to see Focus once again at The Stables in Milton Keynes last night. Theplace was packed. Thijs has been unwell and so it was good to see him in fine fettle, even singing, and the rest of the band on fine form too. We began with Thijs on solo flute, We then had Focus 1 and a snippet of Anonymus (which Akkerman's latest version of would be very hard to beat). Then it was House of the King, a long Eruption which lost some of us a bit in parts, I fear. Then Focus 7 and finishing part one with Sylvia. After the break we had Focus 2, All hens on deck, La Cathedrale and then an extended Harem Scarem with lots of solos, which left me a little unmoved. They ended, of course, with Hocus Pocus and a long solo from Pierre van der Kinden. For their encore, thye not only did a beautifu Focus 3 but Answers Questions Questions Answers (where they can rival Akkerman as they have the flute too). Nice to speak briefly to Thijs before leaving.

Focus in the UK once again April 2026 (and Happy Birthday)

For some reason we tend not to note birthdays on this blog but today Thijs van Leer is 78 today. Happybirthday! Further, Focus will be here in the UK April 20-May 2. Notable dates from my point of view are the two in Wales April 27 (Cardiff, where I have seen them in the past) and May 2 (Newport, where I was born). Also April 28 (Wavendon, MK, where I hope to see them this time round). Other venues include Southampton, Aldershot and Trading Boundaries Nr Fletching, where I have seen Jan twice. They are coming here twice gain before year's end.

Under the Rainbow

The new live album from Jan Akkerman is out today. Some 8 of the 11 grow out of the Focus era. Well worth a listen.
A few days on stand outs for me are Focus 1 and Anonymus (complete with a Yankee doodle segment) both from the very earliest Focus album. Focus 2 excellent, no Focus 3 for some reason.

Focus at Bush Hall, W London April 2023

Shortly after arriving home from the conference I headed out again to West London, to a new venue for me, where Focus were playing - Bush Hall. Bush Hall is a lovely old building and it was an all seater gig. Not good with numbers but several hundred filled the place, with few empty spaces. Nice to meet Elias Weine Weg who had come all the way from Norway to be there. Some nice old geezers did a semi-acoustic blues to set things on their way. Then came the mighty Focus - on form with their usual set. The only surprise all evening was when one of Menno's guitar strings snapped and he had to abandon his favourite Gibson for another green one (didn't seem to make any difference). I probably know ths set (complete with solos from all four) too well to enjoy it to the max. It would be nice to hear live some of the other stuff they have on record.

Focus in Cardiff August 2022

Slipped down to Cardiff last Thursday to see Focus play. The venue was The Earl Hague Club, Whitchurch. A typical set but without La Cathedrale and  including  Focus 7 and a new Song for Bert in memory of the recently deceased former bass player. All the band played well, including Menno Gootjes, who I thought did better with his solo than sometimes in the past. The crowd enjoyed All hens on deck but were less sure about Focus 7 and the bass solo. I'm sure he has said it before but I noticed that Thijs referred to Pierre van der Linden in public as "The world's greatest drummer", which he is, of course.

Focus at Powerhaus March 2022

Got to see Focus last week at the Powerhaus in Camden Town last Thursday. Our tickets had the wrong date and the wrong venue but the right band and so it all worked out well after a long, long wait. Everybody looked a little older but there was no diminution in the commitment and skill one associates with this great band and we had a two hour without a break beginning with Focus 1 Anonymus and ending with Hocus Pocus and an encore of Focus 3, Answers Questions Questions Answers. On the way there were many delights including a rendition of Brother dedicated to Bert Ruiter, former bassist, the news of whose death had reached the band earlier in the day and an ensemble version of Moving Waves that they are working on and that I had never heard before. Great stuff then on the whole despite what is now the familiarity of the set with nice solos and very tight playing. Decent crowd too. Claire Hamill kicked us off with her gentle songs and a version of Yes's Mood for a day by her guitarist.

Jan Akkerman at Trading Boundaries

It was my joy to be down in Sussex last Friday at Trading Boundaries to catch the first of three concerts by Jan Akkerman and his band - the first time in a while. The concert was in two halves and was more jazzy for the first half (a nice section Crackers to Angel Watch) and more rocky for the second (though Focus 2 and Anonymous are unique). The bass player has broken his leg and so had to sit and Jan didn't seem quite happy with his two Gibson guitars for some of the time. I got a little lost on Tommy's Anniversary but otherwise it was a great concert. Nice to meet Jan and Mrs Akkerman, looking after the merchandise. Jan seemed tired at the end of a long day. He is 75, of course.

Latest Focus Tour abandoned

Focus have announced they have been forced to cancel their remaining UK and European tour dates on their Focus 50 tour after Thijs van Leer contacted Covid.
In a short statement, Focus's management said: "Thijs van Leer, whilst being treated in hospital for an unrelated issue, has been diagnosed with COVID. This means that the rest of the UK tour dates have been postponed. Updates on the rescheduling of dates will follow."
The band were due to perform in East Sussex, Dover, Chelmsford and London and European venues. Gutted to be missing them especially after Jan Akkerman pulled out of scheduled dates this month for similar reasons.

Focus Under the Bridge London October 2019

I have been to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea's ground, more than once but I had not really noticed that under the East stadium near the Shed end there is a venue called Under the Bridge, Last Friday night I and a ministerial friend (who I convinced about Focus last time they were in town) were among a couple of hundred squeezed into this state of the art setting. (A light show is a rare treat at a Focus gig but appreciated - I think the visuals man must have a sense of humour as we had a picture of crocuses as we started on Hocus Pocus or as Jan Akkerman would surely have rechristiened it Focus crocus!). We caught most of Chantel McGregor's set which was of a high standard. She plays guitar and sings with a bass and drums rhythm section. Of course, once Focus stepped on stage were into a whole new zone with each member of the band making a solid contribution that was rewarded with a solo slot for for each - more in some cases. Van Leer was on form with the complete array of two kinds of flute, organ, melodica, scat, whistling, throat singing, lots of vocoder and a brief vocal on the opening song.
The set list began as usual with some very early stuff - Focus 1, a little Anonymus and House of the King. We then had a version of Eruption, good but not outstanding on this occasion I thought. We then moved on to some more recent stuff - Winnie and the simple but effective All hands on deck with the essential Sylvia in the middle.
We then had some songs rarely heard, if ever - Focus 4 (!) from Mother Focus and Focus 6 which has never appeared on a Focus album (I can only find it on a van Leer solo album. You can hear a recent live version here.). Between these we had Who's calling? originally on the Akkerman van Leer Focus collaboration of 1985 but recently revived on the Focus 11 album. Staying with 1985 material we then had a very fine version of Le Tango with melodics, whistling, etc. Before tackling that Thijs remarked on the presence in the audience of former wife Rosalie Peters who wrote lyrics for  this and other songs. We then had two numbers from Hamburger Concerto regularly played back to back La Cathedrale and Harem Scarem. In the second, van Leer takes opportunity to make himself scarce. So we had solos from Menno Gootjes and Udo Pannekeet on six string bass. Van der Linden had had one in Eruption and was to get another very full one on the penultimate track.
The set of over two amazing hours (no-one in the band showing any signs of tiring) closed with the usual Hocus Pocus and then slightly over they plumped for Focus 2 (rather than Focus 3) as the closer. Stupendous stuff.
There was an opportunity to meet the band but there was a rather long queue and so we decided to head off.
